Stretch marks (striae) are a form of dermal scarring that occurs when the skin stretches faster than its collagen network can adapt. Once mature, they read as silvery-white linear patterns against the surrounding skin. Stretch mark camouflage uses medical-grade pigment matched to the surrounding skin to fill those lighter areas — reducing the visual contrast and restoring tonal continuity.

The Procedure

Color-matched pigment, linear technique.

Stretch mark camouflage uses a different technique than scar camouflage. The work is largely linear — following the existing pattern of striae — and the pigment is laid in a way that respects the skin’s natural color gradient. Dr. Rusnak matches pigment to the lightest tone in the surrounding skin so the camouflaged area blends naturally rather than darkening into a visible mark.

Common application areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, shoulders, and upper arms. Treatment is typically performed in a two-session protocol with four to six weeks of healing between passes — this allows pigment to settle and gives Dr. Rusnak a chance to make precise color adjustments based on how each individual’s skin retained the first pass.

What to Expect

Two sessions, weeks apart.

Step 01

Consultation

A private appointment to evaluate the stretch marks — their age, color, and the surrounding skin tone. Dr. Rusnak will assess whether the marks are mature enough for camouflage and outline expectations. Photographic baseline is taken for comparison.

Approx. 45 minutes
Step 02

Initial Session

The first pigmentation appointment. Color is matched and laid into the linear pattern of the striae. Treatment area determines session length — a small group of marks may take an hour, broader patches may take two to three. Healing follows for four to six weeks.

Approx. 1–3 hours · Based on area
Step 03

Finalization Session

Four to six weeks after the initial session, Dr. Rusnak evaluates pigment retention and adjusts. This is where the color is fine-tuned — small adjustments to lighter or darker areas based on how the skin healed. Most patients reach their final result after this session.

Approx. 1–2 hours

Who This Procedure Serves

For patients with mature stretch marks.

Stretch mark camouflage works best on mature (silvery-white) striae — typically at least one year old, sometimes longer depending on the patient. Red or purple stretch marks are still in an active inflammatory phase and are not appropriate for camouflage; those should be left to mature first.

Common patient populations include post-pregnancy mothers, individuals after significant weight changes, adolescents with growth-related striae, and bodybuilders. The procedure is appropriate for all Fitzpatrick skin types, though color matching is more complex for darker skin tones — Dr. Rusnak will discuss what’s realistic at consultation.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Are my stretch marks ready for camouflage?

If they’re silvery-white and at least one year old, likely yes. If they’re still red or purple, no — those are in an active phase and need to mature first. Bring photos to consultation or come in person and Dr. Rusnak will tell you definitively.

Will the stretch marks be completely invisible?

No. The texture of stretch marks remains — that’s a structural change to the skin that pigment cannot address. What camouflage does is reduce the visual contrast between the marks and surrounding skin, so they no longer catch the eye. Most patients report that they stop noticing them in the mirror after treatment.

How long does the result last?

Properly performed stretch mark camouflage typically holds for several years. Sun exposure is the biggest factor in fading — we recommend SPF on the treated area at all times. Touch-ups are straightforward when eventually needed.

Can I treat stretch marks on my breasts after surgery?

Yes — and Dr. Rusnak frequently treats post-mastectomy and breast reduction patients who have stretch marks alongside surgical scars. The two procedures (scar camouflage and stretch mark camouflage) can often be combined into a single treatment plan.

How soon after pregnancy can I have this done?

Generally at least twelve months after delivery, longer if you’re still nursing. We want the skin to be stable and the marks to be fully mature before pigment work.
